A native of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Dr. Commers received his Ph.D. from Maastricht University in The Netherlands in 2001 for his research focusing on public understandings of health causation and health policy formulation. He holds a Master's degree in Health Policy and Administration from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
From 2001-2006, Dr. Commers established and developed Commers Health Consulting. He dedicated five years full-time to building the consultancy, which served clients such as the Dutch Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Health of Japan, and Plan International.
Recently, Dr. Commers relocated with his family to the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. He has been employed full-time with Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis since July of 2006, most recently as the Hospital’s Public Policy Program Manager. In 2007, he was appointed Adjunct Professor of climate change and human health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.
Within the context of his adjunct role, Commers teaches on climate change and health. He is actively developing collaborative research work and establishing a network in related policy circles. Commers believes that public health professionals can and should advocate for public policy measures that contribute to the mitigation of climate change as well as to the ability of populations to adapt to the dangers it poses to health.. |
