Mel Duncan
co-founder, Nonviolent Peaceforce
Mel Duncan is the founding Executive Director of Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP). Modeled on the Gandhian concept of Shanti Sena, Nonviolent Peaceforce is composed of trained civilian peacekeepers from around the world. In partnership with local groups, NP applies proven and effective strategies to protect human rights in areas of violent conflict and helps create space for local peacemakers to carry out their work.

Mr. Duncan has over 30 years of organizing and advocating nonviolently for peace, justice and the environment. In 1997 he was granted the prestigious Community Leaders Fellowship from the Archibald Bush Foundation which allowed him to spend 1-1/2 years studying the connections between peace, justice and spirituality.

He is a graduate of Macalester College, St. Paul Minnesota, where he was honored with their Distinguished Citizen award in 2006. He also holds a Masters degree from the New College of California.

The Fellowship of Reconciliation USA awarded him their 2007 Pfeffer International Peace Prize on behalf of Nonviolent Peaceforce’s "courageous efforts in conflict regions around the world."

He and his wife, Georgia Heller Duncan, have eight children and seven grandchildren.
